Leadership Opportunities

Cultivating Future Leaders

Leadership is central to our educational mission, empowering students to lead with purpose and impact. Through participation in Student Leadership Councils and programs, students develop essential skills in leadership, teamwork and responsibility. They embody integrity, empathy and a commitment to effecting positive change, nurturing personal growth, inclusivity and a strong sense of community connection.

Student Leadership Councils

The Student Leadership Councils are designed to promote personal growth and create an inclusive school environment. These programs, led by teachers and organized by the College, offer students opportunities to develop essential leadership skills and actively participate in shaping school culture.

Our comprehensive range of councils include:

Prefect Council

Made up exclusively of Grade 12 students, the Prefects are responsible for student pride, engagement and school spirit. As ambassadors for WIC, Prefects play a vital role in supporting student life at the College.

Students' Council

Promoting student voice, Students' Council is dedicated to fostering school spirit and a vibrant community.

Elected by the student body, the Council organizes various events, including House competitions, school spirit days, and Halloween celebrations. Through these activities, the Students' Council plays a pivotal role in enhancing the school experience and building a strong, united community.

Fine Arts Council (FAME)

FAME is a leadership group for students passionate about Fine Arts. They enhance the cultural life of the school by providing a platform for creative expression.

They plan and organize events such as The Cabaret, contribute to the Fine Arts 'zine, and collaborate with other clubs to enrich the artistic environment at WIC.

Diversity, Inclusion and Pluralism Council (DIPC)

DIPC is for students committed to fostering a more diverse, inclusive and equitable school environment. They celebrate and bring awareness to issues around race, gender, sexuality, class and diversity.

DIPC organizes Multicultural Day, including the annual multicultural lunch where students share and celebrate their cultures and traditions through food.

Additionally, these students participate in inter-school pluralism events, bringing together students from across the city to explore topics such as diversity, accessibility and learning differences.

Community in Action (CIA)

The mission of CIA is "students helping students make a difference in their school." This group of students participates in community and relationship-building activities in the school, with projects that range from school-based initiatives to local community events and global initiatives.

In addition to their impactful work, CIA student-leaders have launched a partnership with Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids, dedicating their efforts to supporting local children in need.

Wellness Council

The Wellness Council promotes wellness across WIC, focusing on environment, fitness, socio-emotional health, academics and nutrition.

They host mental health days with activities like non-uniform days, fundraisers, self-care ideas and therapy dog visits.

The council aims to improve overall well-being, foster open conversations about mental health, and break down stigmas through weekly meetings and events.

West Island College Athletic Association (WICAA)

WICAA play a crucial role in building Wolves pride during athletic tournaments, and games throughout the school year, fostering a strong sense of community and school spirit among students.

They also oversee the intramural program and organize numerous events, including the annual Night of the Wolves Athletic Awards Dinner.

Francophone Council

The Francophone Council is dedicated to showcasing Francophone culture to the whole community.

They organize engaging cultural events such as the Winter Carnaval and Café Croissant, celebrating French traditions and fostering a sense of community with those who share a love for the French language and culture.

League of Institutes (LOI)

In collaboration with Institute Coordinators, the LOI aims to evolve and enhance the Institute Program at WIC. They assist in developing specialized programming for each institute, ensuring that educational opportunities continue to grow and meet the needs of students.

LOI plays an integral role in shaping the future of the Institute Program, contributing to its ongoing success and innovation.

Fostering Inclusive Dialogue and Collaboration

All WIC councils provide leadership opportunities while also serving as platforms for students to engage in meaningful conversations about DEIB. They offer safe spaces for individuals with shared experiences to collaborate, support one another and advocate for positive change.

Together, students can explore ideas, challenge perspectives and actively contribute to building a school community where everyone feels respected and valued.
