International Studies
Expanding Horizons Through Global Exploration
In an increasingly connected world, understanding diverse cultures and perspectives is essential. Offered during spring break for Grades 9 - 12, WIC’s International Studies program provides students with transformative travel experiences that reshape their worldviews. By engaging firsthand with different communities and cultural traditions, students gain an appreciation for global citizenship and develop a deeper, empathetic understanding of our world.
Opportunities
by Grade
At WIC, we tailor our International Studies opportunities to align with students' growth and readiness, gradually expanding their travel experiences from junior high to senior high.
Grades 7/8
For Grade 7 and 8 students, international travel opportunities are limited as they build a foundation at WIC.
In select years, French Immersion students have the unique opportunity to attend a special Quebec trip. This immersive experience allows students to deepen their language skills and connect with the Francophone culture, exploring history, customs and traditions firsthand. This early exposure serves as an engaging introduction to the benefits of international experiences.
Grade 9
In their last year of junior high, students can embark on their first major international trip, offering them a transformative experience that encourages independence, responsibility and cultural awareness. These trips are designed to be immersive and introduce students to new perspectives by exploring diverse communities.
Recent Grade 9 trips have included destinations like Japan and Italy.
Grades 10 - 12
For senior high students, our International Studies program offers more extensive travel opportunities, designed to provide real-world experiences that deepens students' global awareness. Students build meaningful connections with local communities, often engaging directly with local peers and organizations in mutually beneficial exchanges.
Activities may include supporting community projects, exploring historical landmarks or participating in cultural events.

In Their Own Words
The 2024 Brazil trip was an experience I’ll never forget. Activities ranged from Caiman catching in the Amazon jungle to afternoons on the beach in Rio. There was not a single moment in the whole trip that I would have wanted to change in any way. Every place we visited was so captivating and interesting and I really enjoyed experiencing a new culture.
My favourite thing by far was the community project. It was so special to be able to help build a playground and then be able to play on it with all the kids. I met this sweet little girl the day all the families came to the community playground. We hung out the entire time we were there and her and I played on every part of the playground for hours. It made me so happy to be able to see the smiles on everyone’s faces, especially the kids. Luna

One of the main things that made me want to go to Japan was for the experience with my friends. I loved discovering all the new stuff we did, like going to street markets, and trying new food like Tanghulu, which is fruit covered in syrup. Malika

My friends and I had so much fun exploring and navigating Japan. From the buzzing streets of Tokyo to the serene temples in literally the middle of nowhere, every moment was packed with excitement.
Japan's blend of tradition and modernity is truly captivating. Whether we were navigating the crowded neon-lit streets of Shibuya or walking around the trails around Mount Fuji, each experience was unique and memorable.
Personally, my favourite part was spending quality time with my friends, seeing Mount Fuji in person, and, of course, the infamous 7-Eleven that everyone enjoyed making stops to. I also loved the scenery of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and the Hakone National Park.
I think if you have the opportunity to go, you really should! It's a new place, new environment and it's really interesting.

The 2024 Tanzania trip was so rewarding! I honestly found that being in such a remote place made me really find myself, I was able to get away from technology and really get to know myself and I was able to make closer connections with my friends.
I came home from Tanzania with a whole new mindset on life, I found that I am genuinely happier because of my amazing experiences I had in Tanzania, I came home more positive, more active, happier, and just all round feeling better about life.

My journey to Cambodia was simply amazing, packed with invaluable lessons. I absolutely loved the community project, and the exposure to culture. From seeing the crazy way Cambodians drive, to how trusting they are with leaving stalls unattended at markets, everything little thing left a lasting impression. I cannot wait to visit more of Cambodia in the future!!

I loved the sushi making activity in Japan. It was really cool to make my own, as it's one of my favourite dishes.
