At WIC, the school uniform promotes a sense of belonging and equality, allowing students to focus on who they are rather than what they wear. Wearing a uniform also instills pride and care, as our students represent WIC both inside and outside the school community.

Students must wear the regular uniform at all times unless otherwise specified on the WIC Academic Calendar. The formal uniform is required for special events. The summer uniform can be worn from the second day of classes until the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and then again starting from the first day of classes in May.

Yes, every student at WIC is assigned their own locker, either half-sized or full-sized, equipped with a school-supplied lock for security.

In addition, the Phys Ed change rooms have lockers available for use during Phys Ed classes, intramurals, team practices and other activity-based classes. Students must bring a personal lock from home for these specific lockers and are required to remove their lock and belongings at the end of each class or activity. 

Students are strongly encouraged to keep valuables, such as money or personal items, securely locked in their assigned school lockers. Please note that WIC is not responsible for lost or stolen items. 

Students can either bring their own lunch or purchase meals from Café des Loups, located in the Hall of Nations. Café des Loups also offers snacks and drinks, with additional options available from vending machines around the College. 

On Thursdays and Fridays, students also have the option to walk to the Calgary Farmers' Market to explore more food options. Parents/guardians should discuss approval to walk through our shared parking lot to the market with their child. 

WIC also offers a FUN LUNCH option through Healthy Hunger at different times throughout the year. Specific dates will be communicated through the WIC Weekly.  

Our BYOD program empowers students to take charge of their learning by bringing their own devices to school. Integrating personal technology into daily learning helps students build essential tech skills for today’s dynamic world.

Students are expected to start each day with fully charged laptops and bring their chargers to stay prepared for a full day of learning.

As part of Project Here & Now*, WIC does not permit the use of cell phones or smartwatches during the school day. The goal of this initiative is to encourage students to be fully present and engaged with their peers and the WIC community, minimizing distractions from technology. This policy is designed to improve student well-being by fostering a sense of belonging, promoting positive human interaction, and helping students focus on academic success and personal relationships. 

Project Here & Now also includes a range of programs and activities aimed at improving social-emotional skills, building healthier relationships and enhancing the overall student experience at WIC.

At WIC, we make sure that new students feel welcomed and supported from day one. Prior to the first day of classes, new students participate in New Student Orientation, where they meet their peers, and get acquainted with the College and school culture. Students are also paired with a peer mentor and have access to our Student Success Centre.

Our inclusive community fosters friendships, and new students are encouraged to get involved in clubs, sports teams, and other activities right away, helping them find their place in the WIC family. 

Our average class size is 22 for both junior and senior high classes. 

Homework will vary by student and grade level at WIC. Some students may finish their assignments in class, while others may have homework to complete at home. In addition to regular homework, students are expected to study for exams and quizzes to ensure they stay on top of their academic responsibilities. 

At WIC, we understand that every student learns differently and may face challenges along the way. That’s why our Student Success Centre (SSC) provides personalized support to help students thrive academically and emotionally. Through the Pyramid of Intervention model, the SSC offers universal, targeted and specialized support tailored to student's individual needs. 

Whether your child requires extra help with study strategies, wellness support, or personalized accommodations, the SSC works with students to develop tools and strategies that grow with them over time. Our goal is to ensure that every student has the resources and guidance they need to succeed in their unique academic journey.

WIC emphasizes a holistic approach to education, which includes social-emotional learning. Programs and wellness initiatives provide students with tools to develop emotional intelligence, resilience and interpersonal skills. In addition, teachers and staff are trained to support students' mental and emotional well-being. 

Parents are kept informed through Canvas and PowerSchool, which provide updates on student progress.

In addition, WIC holds Parent-Teacher Interviews twice a year, once in October and again in March, where parents can meet directly with teachers to discuss any specific concerns.

Parents are also welcome to communicate directly with teachers through Canvas during the school year for further insights into their child’s academic performance. 

WIC uses a combination of methods to communicate with parents, including email, Canvas, PowerSchool and weekly e-newsletters. Through our WIC Weekly, important announcements, upcoming events and updates are shared to keep parents informed and involved in their student’s education. 

The transition to senior high, which we call Continue Your Journey at WIC, is an exciting step as students will have more responsibility and freedom in choosing their courses and managing their schedules. Students are supported through this transition by teachers and our Academic & Career Advisor, ensuring they make informed decisions about their course loads and post-secondary pathways. Additionally, the curriculum is designed to build on students' existing knowledge, making the shift to more specialized and challenging subjects a little smoother.

WIC’s senior high curriculum is designed with post-secondary readiness in mind. 

Advanced Placement (AP) allows students to pursue university-level studies while still in high school. AP courses are challenging, rigorous, and in-depth, which mimic the types of courses they will take in university. 

Dual credit courses allow senior high students to earn both high school and post-secondary credits simultaneously while helping support them in navigating the shift to post-secondary education. 

With smaller class sizes, students receive personalized attention, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our Academic and Career Advising team also provides guidance on course selection, ensuring students meet graduation requirements and prepare for the post-secondary programs they aspire to enter. Additionally, students participate in University Tours, which allows them to explore their future educational options. 

WIC uses its Progressive Disciplinary Guidelines to make decisions with regards to disciplinary action, if any.  

WIC offers a variety of Advanced Placement (AP) courses such as AP Calculus, AP Biology, AP English Literature, AP Psychology, and AP French Language and Culture. These courses help students prepare for university-level academics.

To graduate in Alberta, students must meet the requirements of the Alberta High School Diploma. This includes completing a minimum of 100-credits by the end of Gr. 12. The required courses include: 

• English Language Arts (30-level course) 
• Social Studies (30-level course) 
• Mathematics (at least 20-level) 
• Science (at least 20-level) 
• Physical Education 10 
• Career and Life Management (CALM)  
• In addition, students must complete a combination of elective courses, including fine arts, second languages, career and technology studies, or other courses of personal interest to fulfill the credit requirements. 

WIC French Immersion students have the opportunity to earn a WIC Bilingual Diploma in addition to their Alberta High School Diploma. 

Students receive support from teachers, the Student Success Centre, and Academic & Career Advising. They’re helped with balancing their course load, managing study schedules and developing effective time management skills.

Throughout junior high, students can also get involved in a variety of clubs and athletic teams, giving them the chance to explore their interests, develop new skills and become an active part of the WIC community. Whether it's sports, arts, or leadership, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. 

Councils and Clubs: 

• Variety of councils and clubs for leadership and engagement. 
• Meetings are held primarily during lunch, with some before or after school. 
• Contribute to student growth, school pride, and community building. 

Intramurals: 

• Organized by WIC’s Athletic Association (WICAA). 
• Held during lunch for all grade levels. 
• Activities and events are advertised on WIC TVs and weekly announcements. 

Athletic Teams: 

• Competitive teams for Grades 7 - 12, with tryouts held at all levels. 
• Teams have both practices and games, often participating in external tournaments. 
• Practices are held before or after school at the College or nearby fields. 
• Games and tournaments are played both at home and away. 

Once a student is enrolled at WIC, parents automatically become members of the Parent Guild. We encourage parents to actively participate in our school community through various opportunities such as volunteering and attending school events. Our Parent Guild plays a vital role in supporting school initiatives and organizing activities that enhance the student experience.
