At WIC, we promote a holistic approach to well-being, emphasizing the diverse ways our students can nurture their overall health. We recognize that every person's wellness journey is unique and requires personalized attention. 

Our commitment to student wellness is central to our educational philosophy. We empower students to excel both personally and academically by supporting their physical, emotional, social and intellectual well-being. This commitment extends beyond students to include faculty & staff, and the broader community, all working together to build a foundation for resilience and meaningful contributions.

The Wellness Wheel is a comprehensive tool that promotes holistic well-being by focusing on various facets of health, including physical, emotional, intellectual and social wellness. It encourages students to find balance in their lives, helping them understand the interconnectedness of these areas and how they contribute to overall well-being.

By using the Wellness Wheel, WIC empowers students to explore strategies for maintaining balance, fostering resilience, and achieving personal growth throughout their academic journey and beyond.

Wellness Initiatives

We offer a variety of programs and activities designed to support and enhance student well-being: 

Mental Wellness Days

These events are dedicated to exploring and celebrating the many ways students can incorporate balance and wellness into their daily lives.

Mental Wellness Days offer something for everyone, such as cozy hat days, energizing dance sessions to creative art workshops, cooking classes, and fitness activities, 

By raising awareness and providing accessible resources, these events empower students to prioritize their mental health and develop habits that support overall well-being.

Student-Led Wellness Council

The student-led Wellness Council is a dynamic group committed to promoting wellness initiatives and providing peer support throughout the WIC community. This passionate team of students leads events and activities designed to highlight the importance of mental health, balance and self-care.

From organizing wellness-themed days to sharing creative activities like yoga, mindfulness sessions, and fitness challenges, the club ensures every student has opportunities to engage in practices that support their well-being. They also take charge of special days such as Pink Shirt Day - Anti-Bullying Day, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all students.

Guest Speakers

Experts across various fields provide valuable insights into wellness, personal growth and community development. These guest speakers share their knowledge during tutorial times, Institute afternoons, and even within class sessions, enriching the student experience with real-world perspectives.

At WIC, we embrace a whole-community approach, extending these opportunities to our parent community through tailored sessions that foster understanding and collaboration.

Recent speakers have included organizations and individuals like WiseGuyz, Paul Davis, Live Different, Juno House, and Canadian Olympians Jason Dorland and Robyn Meagher, all of whom have inspired and educated our community with their unique expertise and experiences.

Cub Cave

Recognizing the need for a dedicated space that focused on serenity and quiet, WIC created the Cub Cave, a space where students, and faculty & staff can meditate, do yoga, pray, reflect, and relax.

Outdoor Education

In an era dominated by technology, Outdoor Ed. encourages students to engage in physical activities. These activities serve as a powerful remedy to stress and anxiety, enhancing overall well-being through opportunities to disconnect from academic pressures. Through these experiences, students develop a deeper appreciation for the outdoors while cultivating habits that support their health and happiness.

Therapy Dogs

Therapy dogs are regularly welcomed at WIC, offering students a calming and supportive presence during their school day. These visits provide a much-needed mood booster, giving students an opportunity to relax, recharge and refocus.

Research from the University of British Columbia (UBC) highlights the significant benefits of therapy dog interactions. These findings emphasize the value of incorporating therapy dog sessions into student wellness initiatives.

At WIC, the Student Success Centre (SSC) is dedicated to supporting every student’s physical, emotional and academic wellness. We believe that a well-rounded approach to education includes addressing the diverse needs of our students, ensuring they have the tools and resources necessary to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Wolves Den Hub Fitness Facility

The state-of-the-art fitness area is equipped with everything from cardio machines to free weights. It’s a place where students, and faculty & staff can focus on their health, improve their strength and maintain overall fitness.

Tutorials

Tutorials at WIC provide structured time for students to focus on personal and academic development.

In Junior High, they emphasize self-assessment and learning strategies, covering topics like navigating stereotypes, fitting in, and staying organized with technology.

In Senior High, tutorials take on a more flexible and student-driven approach. They offer opportunities for group work, connecting with teachers for extra help or peer tutoring. These sessions support students in staying balanced and on track to achieve their goals.

Embracing Every Step Together

Sometimes school can feel overwhelming, but my teachers are helping me learn how to support myself and find balance. Whether it’s bringing in therapy dogs, letting me take a walk when I feel anxious or overwhelmed, or sitting with me one-on-one to help with academics, they’re always there when I need support.
