Honouring Culture, Connecting Families and Celebrating Community

In honour of Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, WIC's International Languages department hosted a lively and heartwarming celebration. Students, parents and abuelas came together to share a morning filled with cultural traditions, delicious cuisine and meaningful connections.

This celebration highlighted the deep pride and value WIC has for its Hispanic students and their families.

Students mentioned how it was important for the College to celebrate their cultures and share food that represents who they are.

The event showcased the richness of Hispanic/Latino culture with a wide spread of traditional foods, including empanadas, ceviche, tres leches cake and chocolate caliente (hot chocolate). The vibrant atmosphere was filled with the buzz of parents conversing in Spanish, creating an authentic and joyous cultural experience.

Other students added how learning Spanish at WIC has helped them sharpen their grammar and how exciting it was to discover how many people at WIC share their linguistic and cultural roots.

Parents echoed their appreciation, noting the uniqueness of the event, and saying that it’s wonderful that WIC is celebrating Hispanic culture and traditions this way.

Many guests expressed hope that this would become an annual tradition, praising the opportunity to meet and socialize with other Spanish-speaking families.

Grandparents also joined the celebration, sharing their delight at seeing their heritage recognized and appreciated. “It’s lovely to celebrate our culture here at WIC,” one grandparent said while enjoying the festivities.

This special gathering not only brought the community together but also highlighted the importance of honouring the diverse cultures that make WIC such a vibrant and inclusive place to learn and grow.
