The Parent Guild: WIC’s Not-So-Secret Superpower

Parent Council? Nope. It’s The Parent Guild

At West Island College (WIC), we’re proud of our academic reputation—but what truly sets us apart is our people. And we can always count on the parents who show up, lead quietly, and bring our community to life.

This year, the WIC Parent Guild (The Guild) was nothing short of extraordinary. From planning unforgettable events to celebrating milestones and showering our staff with appreciation, this passionate group of volunteers was the energy behind so many of the school’s most meaningful moments.

Here’s a look at how they turned an already vibrant year into something truly special.

Bringing People Together

Connection starts with showing up. The Guild launched a series of Parent Socials, designed to bring families together in relaxed, welcoming spaces. New families met familiar faces, longtime parents reconnected, and our community clicked. Alongside these gatherings, Coffee & Conversation (C&C) mornings offered another valuable opportunity for connection. Hosted by Head of School & CEO Erin Corbett and members of the school leadership team, these sessions gave parents a space to ask questions, share ideas, and engage directly with the people shaping their children’s WIC experience. Whether over coffee or conversation, every interaction deepened the sense of belonging that defines the WIC community.

Grandparents’ Day, the WIC Way

Grandparents’ Day has become a beloved annual event for WIC students to share a day with their beloved grandparents. Hosted by The Guild, Grandparents’ Day provides an opportunity for our students to show off their favourite spaces around the WIC campus, and introduce the faculty & staff who make the WIC experience extraordinary.

A Field of Dreams—and a Community Behind It

This spring, WIC officially opened its new athletic field and greenspace—a project years in the making. It marked a turning point in how our students engage with outdoor learning, physical activity, and school spirit.

And when it came time to celebrate, the Guild stepped up once again—supporting everything from planning and hospitality to making sure the event felt worthy of the milestone it marked. The field was the star of the show, but our community was the heartbeat.

Staff Appreciation Dinner: A Taste of the Greek Isles

And if that wasn’t enough, then came one of the most meaningful events of the year: the annual Staff Appreciation Dinner. With the theme “Touring the Greek Isles,” more than 80 parents came together to cook, decorate, and design a Mediterranean-inspired afternoon of thanks.

From hand-prepared dishes to custom decor, every detail was a reflection of gratitude. Faculty and staff were celebrated not just with words, but with the warmth and generosity that defines the WIC parent community.

Recycled Uniform Sale

What starts as a practical way for families to reuse and recycle gently worn WIC uniforms becomes a powerful act of giving. With parents volunteering their time to organize, sort, and manage the event, this sale has become both a community service and a fundraiser. Over the last couple of years, the Recycled Uniform Sales have  raised over $45,000—funds that helped bring WIC’s new athletic field and green space to life.

More Than Just Supporters—They’re Builders of Culture

The truth is, the Parent Guild doesn’t just support the WIC community, they help shape it.

Their work may not always make the headlines, but it absolutely makes the difference: creating space for connection, making people feel valued, and reminding us what’s possible when families and schools partner close. To every parent who volunteered time, shared their talents, or simply showed up: thank you. You’re a part of what makes West Island College one of the most engaged, supportive, and connected independent schools in Calgary.

We can’t wait to see what you bring to the table next year.
