AP vs IB...What's the Difference?
Jordan Rebagliati, Communications Officer

While the International Baccalaureate® (IB) is without a doubt a well-renowned international education program, the Advanced Placement (AP®) program at West Island College (WIC) allows our students to engage in university-level studies while earning university credit in high school.

AP® courses are designed to mimic post-secondary courses giving students the best opportunity to prepare for university and beyond.

Who should take AP®?

The AP® program is aimed at students who are looking for an additional academic challenge while expanding their learning outside of the regular curriculum.

At WIC, students can register for AP® courses starting in Grade 11, which is a great time to develop time-management and study habits that will be essential for success in university.

AP® benefits and advantages

While IB is a European standard, AP® is a widely recognized academic standard in North America, providing WIC students with an edge in the university application process.

The AP® program is also incredibly flexible and customizable. Students can choose to take or challenge courses they are interested in, without interfering with the rest of their academic schedule.

“85% of selective colleges and universities report that a student’s AP® experience favorably impacts admission decisions.”

Hear from our Academic & Career Advisor, Erik Loewen:

“WIC students in Grades 11 and 12 truly thrive when they take AP® courses, gaining invaluable benefits that set the stage for their future academic journeys. These courses provide them with university-level experiences, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to tackle the rigours of higher education. Not only do they have the chance to earn potential university credit, but they also get an early opportunity to delve into subjects that ignite their passions and interests.

What's more, AP® courses operate in a low-stakes environment. The grades earned are only considered for university admissions if they enhance the student's application, allowing students to take on challenges without the pressure of jeopardizing their chances. This unique blend of preparation and reassurance empowers WIC students to make the most of their high school experience while confidently paving the way for their future academic successes.”
