Admissions FAQ

At WIC, we aim to recruit students who are curious, motivated and eager to engage in a rigorous academic environment. Our students are often characterized by their strong work ethic, ability to collaborate with others and willingness to participate in extra-curricular activities. We value diversity and encourage students who are open-minded and willing to contribute to our vibrant school community. 

We welcome applications from students with a psycho-educational assessment. However, the ability to accommodate a student will depend on the specific accommodations required or recommended in the assessment. While WIC strives to support all students in various areas—including academics, physical health, and emotional wellbeing—we may not be able to meet every student’s needs. If we are unable to proceed with an application, our team will let you know.

Student applicants must upload a 3 – 5-minute max. personal video statement answering the following questions.

Our main intake years are Grade 7 and Grade 10. We will consider applications for other grades on a case-by-case basis, depending on suitability and available space. Please contact the Admissions Department if you are looking to apply for non-intake years.

Due to the challenges involved with building timetables, making social connections, ensuring athletic transfers, and/or potential lack of space, WIC rarely accepts new students for Grades 11 and 12. As well, we will only consider an applicant who has demonstrated strong results in all areas of the admissions process. This can only be determined once an applicant has completed all the steps required: student profile questionnaire, CCAT testing, writing sample, group interview, submission of report cards, and, if applicable, psycho-educational assessment and IPP. 

Please note: Applying for a non-intake year does not guarantee that the Admissions Department will proceed with the application process. Please contact the Admissions Department if you are looking to apply for a non-intake year.

Priority status is given to applicants who:

• Have siblings currently attending WIC;
• Had siblings attend WIC; and/or
• Have parents who are alumni.

Note: Admission to WIC is not guaranteed for priority applicants. All applicants must meet admissions requirements and be deemed a fit for the College.

The admissions process timeline varies depending on when you apply.

Note: Early offers for Grade 7 and Grade 10 applicants who complete the application process and are deemed a fit for the College begin each December. Additional offers will be made at the end of January or early February, depending on the re-enrollment status of current students, and will be on-going throughout the year.

The application process at WIC is competitive. We often have to make difficult decisions and some applicants may either be waitlisted or declined. 

After an applicant has completed all the required steps (report cards, CCAT, writing sample, group interview, etc.), our Admissions Committee will review the file and determine if an offer of admission can be made. Note: Decisions are made by the Committee and not by one individual person. 

The application process at WIC is competitive. We often have to make difficult decisions and some applicants may either be waitlisted or declined. 

After our Admissions Committee has reviewed a student’s application including student profile responses, test results, writing samples, interviews, report cards and psych-ed/IPPs (if applicable), it will make a decision and assign one of the following statuses: 

• Accepted – an offer for admission will be sent. 
• Declined – an applicant who has been deemed “not a suitable fit” for WIC will receive a declined notification letter. Note: Admissions test results are only ONE part of the assessment process that is taken into consideration. 
• Waitlisted – a student will be waitlisted if they are deemed suitable for admission but there is no available space for the application year. If and when a spot opens up, the Admissions Department will review all waitlisted applicants and offer the spot to the most suitable candidate. 

Yes, it is mandatory for prospective students and their families to attend ONE of the following:

• self-guided virtual tour;
• Friday Info Session; or
• the Annual Open House.

Experiencing our campus firsthand allows you to better understand our community, facilities and educational approach. 

NEW! We now offer a self-guided virtual tour, providing flexibility for families to explore the campus at their own pace while still gaining valuable insights into our school environment. If you choose this tour option, you do not need to book a Friday Info Session. 

NOTE: Due to the volume of applications WIC receives each year, WIC will only accommodate ONE Info Session per prospective family. Before booking, please ensure your student is available to attend with you.

Our transportation contractor provides limited-service bus routes to neighbourhoods with the greatest demand and are subject to change from year-to-year.  

Transportation routes and schedules are designed to limit the amount of time a student spends on the bus. To reduce ride times, routes are developed to minimize the number of communities and the total stops on each bus route.  

Routes do not provide door-to-door service and often require families to meet at a central pick-up location.  

Bus registration is first-come first-served, and bus capacity is limited. Some routes are already at capacity and have a waitlist.  

Space on the bus is not guaranteed and returning bus riders must re-register for bus services each year, adhering to the registration deadline.

Yes, the WIC Open House is an excellent opportunity for prospective students and their families to explore the College, meet our faculty & staff and learn more about our programs. RSVPs are required.

If your child has participated in a sport(s) at their current school in Grade 10 or 11 and is registered with the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA), there are no guarantees that a transfer request will be granted by the current school. 

Note: Athletic transfer requests are beyond WIC's control and are determined by the prospective student's current school.

Yes, we accept international applicants who meet the same standards as all other applicants. WIC requires applicants, where English is not their first language, to provide proof of English language ability by achieving a minimum of Level 4 on the TOEFL test.

Other forms of proof may be considered but must be discussed in advance with the Admissions department.

Please note that application fees are non-refundable. If your child does not meet the required English language proficiency level, we recommend only applying when they have achieved the minimum standard.

By definition, ‘International Students’ are those who are:

• non-residents of Alberta; or
• are in Alberta with a Canadian Study Permit and are not eligible for the Alberta Subsidy for Resident Students.

These students must assume the total cost of education for each year they attend WIC and will be subject to International Tuition, Family Membership and Capital Improvement Fees.

WIC does not offer an EAL (English as an Additional Language) program and does not have adequate resources to support EAL students with insufficient English levels. WIC reserves the right to refuse any applicants who do not possess a sufficient level of English during the application phase.

We do not offer boarding or a homestay program. Students accepted to WIC must be living with their parent(s) or a legally-appointed guardian while in Canada (documentation is required).

The TOEFL Junior Standard Test measures English-language skills in four key areas: Listening, Language Form and Meaning, Reading, and Speaking. WIC requires applicants, where English is not their first language, to provide proof of English language ability by achieving a minimum of Level 4 on the TOEFL test.

Other forms of proof may be considered but must be discussed in advance with the Admissions department.

Admissions Testing

• A testing date will be confirmed contingent upon completion of the application form and providing all required documentation.
• They occur:
  • First round of testing will take place in the fall on a Saturday at WIC.
  • Testing that occurs in January onwards may take place on a weekday or weekend. 
• Testing will require approximately 3 hours of the student’s time and will comprise of the: 
  • CCAT (Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test) - 90-minute standardized test; and
  • Writing Sample (in English or French) – 20-minute timed.

Admissions test results are only ONE part of the process that is taken into consideration. Our Admissions Committee reviews all applications, student profile responses, test results, writing samples, interviews, report cards and psych-ed/IPPs (if applicable) as part of the whole process.  

While academic performance plays an important role when considering future WIC students, we take a holistic approach and consider other factors as well, such as, but not limited to:

• Character and social suitability.
• Behavioural traits.
• Ability to contribute positively to the school community and beyond.
• Academic, athletic, artistic, creative potential, to name a few.
• Desire to grow academically, socially and emotionally.

Note: Admission to WIC is not guaranteed for priority applicants (siblings, or children of alumni or staff). All applicants must meet admissions requirements and be deemed a fit for the College.

If an applicant has a current psycho-educational assessment or IPP indicating a need for testing accommodations, we will review the details and confirm with parents/guardians what accommodations, if any, can be provided.

Please note: the CCAT is a standardized timed test, so extra time cannot be granted. Applicants may complete the writing sample portion of the admissions test using either a laptop or pencil and paper.

No, prospective students cannot opt-out. The CCAT standardized test is mandatory for all applicants, unless they can provide the results from a similar test taken within one year of applying to WIC (ex. SSAT). WIC reserves the right to request additional testing, if needed.

The CCAT standardized test is one tool among many that help us assess a student’s preparedness for our rigorous academic environment. While it provides a consistent and objective measure of academic ability, we recognize its limitations and balance it with a thorough review of each applicant’s character, contributions, and potential to thrive at WIC. 

No, preparing for the CCAT is not recommended, however, you can let your child know that the test will be multiple choice.

It is important that WIC gauges where a student is at in their learning and knowledge in the three areas on the CCAT (Verbal, Nonverbal and Quantitative).

At this time, we do not share CCAT results with parents or prospective students. We do, however, share the results with other schools, upon request. 

If a student applying to Grades 7 – 12 is already registered to write the SSAT, WIC will accept these results in lieu of writing the CCAT.

Parents are responsible for understanding WIC’s admissions process and deadlines and for sharing SSAT test results with WIC and/or other schools. 

WIC is operated as a private educational institution governed by a Board of Directors. Our administration team, led by the Head of School & CEO, is responsible for the day-to-day operations and strategic planning. We are committed to maintaining high standards of academic excellence and ensuring a supportive learning environment. 

Our average class size is 22 for both junior and senior high classes. 

Once a student is enrolled at WIC, parents automatically become members of the Parent Guild. We encourage parents to actively participate in our school community through various opportunities such as volunteering and attending school events. Our Parent Guild plays a vital role in supporting school initiatives and organizing activities that enhance the student experience.

Yes, there are additional expenses beyond tuition to consider.

Families are responsible for school supplies and providing their own laptop. Until teachers provide detailed supply lists, a binder with loose-leaf paper is a great starting point. Activity fees may apply for opportunities such as athletic teams, international travel, camps, trips, merchandise, and other extracurricular activities.

There are also mandatory fees for special events, including the Grade 9 Celebration and Grade 12 Graduation, which will be invoiced separately.
